"Couldn't refresh feed" means the Instagram app couldn't download new posts from Instagram's servers. It's one of the first errors people see during an Instagram outage, but a weak connection, an old app version or a problem with your account can cause it too.

Is Instagram down?

Check our Instagram status page. If feed reports are spiking, it's an outage and you'll just need to wait.

Fixes for iPhone and Android

  1. Switch networks. Turn Wi-Fi off and use mobile data, or the other way round.
  2. Close Instagram fully and reopen it.
  3. Update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  4. Check your date and time are set automatically.
  5. Clear the cache on Android: Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage, Clear cache. On iPhone, offload or reinstall the app.
  6. Turn off your VPN or Low Data Mode.
  7. Try instagram.com in a browser. If it works there, reinstall the app.
  8. Log out and back in, as a last resort. Make sure you know your password first.

Could my account be restricted?

If Instagram works for friends on the same network but not for you, your account may be temporarily limited, for example after lots of liking or following in a short time. Check the Account Status section in your settings, and wait a day before trying again.

Questions

Why does Instagram keep saying couldn't refresh feed?

Instagram can't reach its servers: either Instagram is down, your connection is weak, or the app needs updating. A temporary account restriction can also cause it.

Does clearing Instagram's cache delete my posts?

No. Your posts, messages and account are stored online. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files on your phone.
