How to fix Discord stuck on "RTC Connecting"

Is Discord down right now?Live checks and problem reportsChecking

When you join a Discord voice channel, Discord sets up a real-time connection (RTC) to one of its voice servers. If it stays on RTC Connecting, or shows No Route or ICE Checking, that connection can't be completed. You'll see the channel but can't hear or talk.

It's usually caused by a VPN, firewall or router blocking Discord's voice traffic, which uses UDP. Occasionally Discord's voice servers in your region are having problems.

Is Discord voice down?

Check our live Discord status page. If lots of people are reporting voice problems right now, it's an outage and the fix is to wait. If not, work through the steps below.

Fixes, quickest first

  1. Leave the channel and rejoin, then fully quit Discord (right-click the tray icon, Quit Discord) and reopen it.
  2. Turn off your VPN, or use one that supports UDP. Discord voice doesn't work over VPNs that only pass TCP.
  3. Turn off Quality of Service. In Discord go to User Settings, Voice & Video, and switch off Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority. Some routers misbehave with it on.
  4. Allow Discord through your firewall and antivirus. On Windows, search "Allow an app through Windows Firewall" and make sure Discord is ticked for private and public networks.
  5. Try a different voice region. If you can edit the channel, open Edit Channel, Overview, and change Region Override from Automatic to a nearby region.
  6. Restart your router and flush DNS with ipconfig /flushdns on Windows.
  7. Test another network, such as a phone hotspot. If voice works there, your home router or internet provider is blocking it.

On a school or work network?

Many school, university and office networks block the UDP traffic Discord voice needs. There's nothing to fix on your device; use mobile data instead.

Questions

What does RTC Connecting mean on Discord?

Discord is trying to set up the real-time connection to a voice server. If it stays there, something is blocking or dropping that connection, usually a VPN, firewall or router.

What is "No Route" on Discord?

No Route means Discord couldn't reach the voice server at all. A VPN, firewall or a change of network (such as switching Wi-Fi) is the usual cause.
