If Discord sits on its loading animation, shows a blank grey window, or says Connecting forever, it can't reach Discord's servers or its local files are damaged.
Start by checking whether Discord is having an outage. If it isn't, the fixes below solve most cases in a few minutes.
Is Discord down?
See our Discord status page for live checks and reports. If many people are reporting login or connection problems, wait it out.
Fixes for the desktop app
- Fully quit Discord from the system tray (or end it in Task Manager) and reopen it.
- Try Discord in a browser at discord.com/app. If it works there, the app on your computer is the problem.
- Clear Discord's cache. Quit Discord, press Windows+R, type
%appdata%\discord, and delete theCache,Code CacheandGPUCachefolders. On a Mac they're in~/Library/Application Support/discord. - Turn off your VPN or proxy.
- Check your date and time are set automatically; a wrong clock breaks secure connections.
- Reinstall Discord if nothing else works: uninstall, delete
%appdata%\discordand%localappdata%\Discord, then download it again.
Fixes for iPhone and Android
- Close Discord fully and reopen it.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update Discord from the App Store or Google Play.
- On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Discord, Storage, and tap Clear cache.
Questions
Why is Discord stuck on the loading screen?
Usually because it can't reach Discord's servers (an outage, VPN or network problem) or because its cached files are damaged. Clearing the cache fixes the second.
Will clearing Discord's cache delete my messages?
No. Messages are stored on Discord's servers. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files on your device.
