If your BT broadband has stopped working, it's either a BT or Openreach fault in your area, a problem with your Hub, or something inside your home. A few checks will tell you which.

Is BT down?

Check our BT status page to see whether others are reporting problems right now. BT's own service status checker (on bt.com and in the My BT app) shows known faults for your line and area.

Fixes to try

  1. Restart your BT Hub. Switch it off at the power, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on, and give it up to 10 minutes.
  2. Check the cables. Make sure the broadband cable is firmly in the Hub and the wall socket (or the fibre box, for Full Fibre).
  3. Check the Hub's light. A steady blue light normally means connected; orange or red means there's a connection problem.
  4. Plug a device in with an Ethernet cable. If that works, the problem is Wi-Fi, not your line.
  5. On a phone line connection, try the test socket. Many Openreach master sockets have a removable lower faceplate with a test socket behind it. Plug the Hub in there; if broadband works, the fault is in your home wiring or extensions.
  6. Report the fault through the My BT app or bt.com if none of this helps.

Questions

How do I check if BT broadband is down in my area?

Use BT's service status checker in the My BT app or on bt.com, and check a live status page for reports from other BT customers.

Why is my BT Hub light orange?

An orange light usually means the Hub can't connect to broadband. Restart it, check the cables, and check for a BT outage.
