When emails stop arriving in Gmail, they're usually being delivered somewhere you're not looking, such as Spam, another tab or a filter, or Gmail is refusing them because your storage is full. Less often, Gmail is having an outage and mail is delayed.

Is Gmail down?

Check our Gmail status page. During outages, messages are usually delayed rather than lost and arrive once Gmail recovers.

Where to look

  1. Search All Mail. Type the sender's address into the Gmail search box; this searches every folder.
  2. Check Spam and mark the email as "Not spam" if it's there.
  3. Check the Promotions, Social and Updates tabs.
  4. Check your filters: Settings, See all settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses. A filter may be archiving or deleting the messages, or the sender may be blocked.
  5. Check forwarding: Settings, Forwarding and POP/IMAP. If forwarding is on with "delete Gmail's copy", mail won't stay in your inbox.
  6. Check your storage. Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos share your storage (15 GB on free accounts). When it's full, new email can't be received.
  7. On a phone, make sure sync is on for your Google account and that the Gmail app is up to date.
  8. Ask the sender whether they got a bounce message. That tells you whether the email reached Google at all.

Questions

Why am I not receiving emails in Gmail?

Usually the emails are in Spam, another tab or caught by a filter, or your Google storage is full. Sometimes Gmail is delayed by an outage.

Are emails lost when Gmail is down?

Rarely. Sending servers keep trying for hours or days, so most delayed emails arrive once Gmail recovers.
