What to do if GitHub Copilot is not working
- Start a new chat in GitHub Copilot. Very long conversations can fail even when the service is up.
- If you see a rate limit or capacity message, wait a few minutes. These limits reset over time and aren't a full outage.
- Refresh the page or reopen the app to clear a stuck response, then resend your last message.
- Disable browser extensions such as ad blockers and VPNs, which can break GitHub Copilot's streaming responses.
- Check whether your plan's usage limit has been reached in your GitHub Copilot account settings.
- Try the GitHub Copilot mobile app or another browser to tell an account problem from a device problem.
GitHub Copilot outage FAQ
Is GitHub Copilot down for everyone, or just me?
Look at the status at the top of this page. We connect to github.com directly from our servers, so if our check works but GitHub Copilot doesn't work for you, the problem is more likely your device, network or account. If our check fails, or reports have jumped in the last hour, GitHub Copilot is probably having a wider outage.
Why does this page say GitHub Copilot is up when it isn't working for me?
Our check confirms that github.com is reachable and responding. An outage can still affect only part of GitHub Copilot, such as logging in, the mobile app or a single feature, or only some regions. That's why visitor reports matter: when many people report problems at once, we flag GitHub Copilot as having problems even if the website loads.
How often do you check GitHub Copilot?
We check GitHub Copilot automatically several times a day, and again whenever someone opens this page and our last check is more than a few minutes old.
How do I report a GitHub Copilot outage?
Use "Report a problem" on this page to tell us what isn't working. Reports are anonymous: we don't store your IP address, only a one-way code that stops the same person reporting many times, plus your country.
