What to do if DVLA is not working
- Hard-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) to bypass cached errors.
- Try DVLA in a private window to rule out extensions and stale cookies.
- If you're on a school or work network, a filter or firewall may be blocking DVLA. Try another network.
- Check whether DVLA is down only in your region by trying it on mobile data.
- For assignment or exam platforms, screenshot any errors with the time showing. Instructors often accept them as proof of an outage.
- Change your DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 if DVLA fails to load but other sites work.
DVLA outage FAQ
Is DVLA down for everyone, or just me?
Look at the status at the top of this page. We connect to gov.uk directly from our servers, so if our check works but DVLA doesn't work for you, the problem is more likely your device, network or account. If our check fails, or reports have jumped in the last hour, DVLA is probably having a wider outage.
Why does this page say DVLA is up when it isn't working for me?
Our check confirms that gov.uk is reachable and responding. An outage can still affect only part of DVLA, such as logging in, the mobile app or a single feature, or only some regions. That's why visitor reports matter: when many people report problems at once, we flag DVLA as having problems even if the website loads.
How often do you check DVLA?
We check DVLA automatically several times a day, and again whenever someone opens this page and our last check is more than a few minutes old.
How do I report a DVLA outage?
Use "Report a problem" on this page to tell us what isn't working. Reports are anonymous: we don't store your IP address, only a one-way code that stops the same person reporting many times, plus your country.
