How to fix ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS

Updated 15 October 2026 · Site Down Right Now

ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS appears as "This page isn't working: example.com redirected you too many times". The site keeps sending your browser to another address, which sends it back again, so the browser gives up.

As a visitor, clearing the site's cookies fixes it surprisingly often. If it doesn't, the website is misconfigured and the owner needs to fix it.

Fixes for visitors

  1. Clear cookies for that site. In Chrome, click the icon left of the address, then Cookies and site data (or Site settings), and delete them. Reload.
  2. Try a private window. If it works there, it was your cookies or an extension.
  3. Turn off extensions, especially ones that force HTTPS or redirect pages.
  4. Check your date and time are correct.
  5. Check if it's broken for everyone with our website checker. If it is, wait for the site to fix it.

If you own the website

  • Look for rules that fight each other, such as one redirect to www and another away from it, or HTTP to HTTPS and back again.
  • Behind Cloudflare, the classic cause is SSL mode Flexible while the server also redirects HTTP to HTTPS. Set SSL/TLS to Full (strict) with a valid certificate on the server.
  • On WordPress, check that the WordPress Address and Site Address settings match exactly, including https:// and www.
  • Use curl -I on the address to see each redirect step.

Questions

What causes ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS?

A redirect loop: the website keeps sending the browser between addresses. Bad cookies can trigger it, but it's usually a misconfigured site.

Does clearing cookies fix too many redirects?

Often, yes, when the loop is triggered by an old login or language cookie. If it happens in a private window too, the website itself is misconfigured.
